I wanted to include one of them because the lake is a wonderful recreation area, but I was uncertain which to pick. Circumstances narrowed my choices. When I got to Kellettville, I discovered that the campground was closed for renovations. That left the Outflow Campground, which is open year-round, has 39 sites, and costs $10 per night (and which, incidentally, campers often confuse with the Youghiogheny Lake Outflow area two-and-a-half hours to the south); or the Recreation Area Campground, with its 125 sites, short camping season (end of May to Labor Day), and exorbitant $25 per night camping fee. My inclination is always toward the smaller and less expensive, which is why I spent the night at the outflow area. But to be honest, I would have preferred the recreation area. Even though you’ll see more people and RVs and you’ll pay more money, the recreation area has more amenities, it is cleaner and equally as scenic, and its sites have more privacy. But if you are in the area during the off-season, the Outflow Campground will necessarily be your choice. The campground at the recreation area is a really, really beautiful place with a lot to do. The recreation area itself includes a ball field, playground, volleyball court, miniature golf, and picnic area. You can bring a boat because there is a launch nearby (boats of unlimited horsepower are allowed) and good fishing all around the lake. I saw quite a few canoes in the campground. Don’t come here planning on a wilderness camping experience, because you won’t find it.
